i wanna rock right now.

photo cred: me
music.
i can talk about it all day every day. how depressing would the world be without it? quite. growing up in small town usa, i wasn't exposed to a large variety of music-- we pretty much stuck to rap, country and pop, and then i went to college. whew, i would have been listening to only mainstream garbage music for the rest of my life.. i shutter just thinking about it. music from band of horses, mumford & sons and bon iver have the kind of songs that have changed my whole musical outlook.

here's the thing, i have no shame about the music i listen to, there is so much variety it isn't even funny and most of them i will belt out with the same enthusiasm as the next: britney spears (duh), fleet foxes, girl talk, the righteous brothers, the avett brothers, lil wayne, jefferson airplane, backstreet boys (greatest hits, you better believe it), explosions in the sky, jimmy eat world, kid cudi, the smiths, rebelution, tenacious d --there are 15 bands/artists for you to ponder, but i don't even think that begins to scratch the surface of my spectrum of music and here's the thing, i've gotta know exactly what kind of people i'm friends with-- and to find that out, i find out about their music taste. if i honestly ask myself "am i better friends with people that have fantastic taste in music" 90% of the time i'm going to say; "abso-effing-lutely"

think about people that listen to music like "this is why i'm hot.. i'm hot cause i'm fly, you ain't cause you're not" wow, really, "mims"? lou bega anyone "mambo #5", "in the ayer"? who are those people? i understand people listening to such music as a joke or in a party scene but if i ever find myself with a friend that is like "it's goin' down" is my jaaaam" that's when i'll move to another continent--and you know what kind of songs i'm talking about. i'm not even just singling out rap music, notta chance-- but just throw in anything from justin bieber and i wan't to vomit (kid stop talking about buying rings for the love of your life, aren't you like 11?)

if you reference my 15 listed artists above you might think "jenny how can you justify listening to people like backstreet boys" and here is why; i'm not saying i get all sorts of philosophical over nick carter or that is my music of choice, by any means, but i don't mind jamming out to the likes of nsync, hanson and mandy moore, shamelessly, among friends-- it's pure entertainment. who doesn't like to jam annoyingly to old school pop? (if you don't, stop acting like you're too old/mature to listen to them.) you better believe i know them all by heart, still.

if you looked at me, would you think i would know all the words to a majority of tha carter III album? i think not. i like to keep people on their toes. so jam with me and we'll probably be alright, if not you just stick to your high school 50cent and travis tritt favorites and i'll do my thing (and you keep doing your less cool thing, preferably not near me).

i don't think i'm a music snob (music snobs are annoying) but i just think i have superior taste in music, is that so wrong?

  1. "Pop Lock & Drop It", "Take On Me", "Championship Pop Bottles", "Go Getta"....

All songs that I have jammed to on repeat with Jenny Halbert for the past few years.

  2. It's my personal philosophy to listen to anything and everything that @jenhalbs listens to/suggests.

Without you, I would be lost and listening to "Ridin' Dirty" on repeat.

    Probably not, but still.

  3. I can totally agree with you that I STILL know all of the words to oldschool pop music. I caught myself singing along to EVERY WORD of Spice Girls this morning while I was driving to work in my car.

(My iPod was on shuffle. Don't judge!)
